“Dr. Hernandez will join dental health professionals in Haiti to provide free dental treatments to 300+ children.”
Miami, Florida - December 2, 2018 – Dr. Julio Hernandez, of Biscayne Dental & Facial Aesthetics, will embark on a 6-day dental health mission in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on December 11, 2018. There he will provide free dental health services to nearly 300 impoverished children between the ages of five and fifteen.
After a successful dental health mission trip in Haiti earlier this year, and with the help of Calvin Hughes, the local WPLG Channel 10 anchorman, Dr. Julio was approached by the Catwalk for Charity Organization and the Prodev Foundation to organize a second mission trip to Haiti. As the mission organizer, Dr. Julio is responsible for assembling a team of dental professionals and procuring the dental supplies needed to perform dental cleanings and extractions on 300+ kids in some of poorest neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
"Using my skills to help under-served children brings me tremendous joy and a sense of purpose to my life," says Dr. Julio.
Dr. Julio and his team of four dentists and three hygienists will see patients from Wednesday, December 12 to Saturday, December 15. Two classrooms at a school built by the Prodev Foundation will be converted into makeshift dental clinics for four days. All dental supplies must be flown with the team. Using only the supplies they bring, and flashlights for visibility, they will be the first dental professionals many of these children meet.
The mission to Haiti will conclude with a Christmas celebration for over 5,000 kids from Port-au-Prince and neighboring cities. The all-day event features breakfast with Santa, magicians, musical performances, games, food, and other fun activities. All kids will receive a new wrapped toy that was donated throughout the year with the help of funds raised by the charity and several toy drives initiated by organizers. This will be the only toy many receive over the holidays, and the first gift some have received in years.
This will be Dr. Julio’s second dental health mission to Haiti. In March 2018, Dr. Julio traveled to Haiti and participated in the Renand Foundation’s Dental Health Program, a non-profit initiative committed to improving access to preventive dental healthcare and treatment in Haiti. There he joined a team of dental professionals to provide free dental treatments to over 150 children over a tireless three-day period.
